TIE’s Intimacy Choreography Lab is a one-day session that clarifies the scope of the Intimacy Choreographer’s/Director’s responsibilities, offers transparency, and builds confidence for working in theater and live performance. Participants can put their knowledge into practice through role-plays and group discussions.

Facilitators will offer scenarios and guiding questions for ICs/IDs of all experience levels to work through in small groups. Professional actors will join the workshops to work with participants. The day will include a simulated process for preparation, rehearsal, and production.

This engaged space is designed to build collective knowledge, encourage one another, and find solutions to common issues that may arise at any stage of the process. All are welcome, regardless of experience level, and no prerequisites are required.

Staging Intimacy Beyond the Binary

In Staging Intimacy Beyond the Binary, we will examine the ethics, aesthetics, and praxis of staging trans and nonbinary intimacy from queer/trans perspectives. The TIE workshop will examine existing works of TGNC artistry, discuss expanded cultural perspectives on gender and consent, and provide opportunities to generate choreography with constructive feedback. All are welcome, and we especially invite trans, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming artists at any stage of their artistic journey to join this collaborative learning space.

Best Practices: This workshop offers a comprehensive overview of TIE’s foundational principles, grounded in over 15 years of research. Participants will learn TIE’s best practices, including tools for developing a consent-based process, setting boundaries, de-loading and desexualizing the process, choreographing intimacy, and documentation. Each person will leave Best Practices with actionable tools and the confidence to be more effective in the room. 

Why is this course a prerequisite for a majority of TIE Workshops? This course is a prerequisite because the workshop it covers is the foundation for all of TIE’s research. Other TIE workshops assume participants have completed this workshop and have a basic understanding of the 5 Best Practices.

Research Tools & Writing About Your Work will introduce performance-based research methods for analyzing and writing about your practice and the discoveries you make that can help propel the field of intimacy choreography forward. This TIE workshop will guide participants through discussing their findings in the early stages of writing a research article or book chapter, and then explain the submission and editorial processes to increase transparency in the publication of scholarship in theatre and performance.

Fat performers move through a world that not only still frequently finds it difficult to imagine fat people in romance narratives, but which often literally isn't built for them. A little foresight on the part of designers and choreographers can allow fat performers to spend more time focusing on their craft and less time educating and advocating for what they need for their bodies to find the same access to a space and process as their straight-sized counterparts. Youth Mental Health First Aid is a public education program that supports youth ages 12-18. In this workshop, you will practice recognizing signs and symptoms of mental health challenges, learn about action steps you can take to support youth, consider mental health resources, and discuss ways to be a mental health advocate in your community.

Important Notes:

• This workshop *requires* participants to have cameras on for the entire workshop. This is a requirement from the National Council for Mental Wellbeing (NCMW). This is not the right workshop for you if this does not work within your boundaries.

• Attendees must be living and/or working in the USA to participate in this certification.

• There are no refunds or exchanges for this workshop.

• Registration for all MHFA Workshops will close 14 days before the workshop.

• This workshop will use all 7 hours, with short breaks.

• This certification is specific to the United States. It is granted through the National Council for Mental Wellbeing and is not a TIE certification.

• Participants must complete two hours of pre-work before the live class and a comprehension quiz and evaluation afterward to receive their certification.

Intimacy work cannot exist in a vacuum. A culture of consent is necessary to foster and sustain long-term changes in how artists collaborate and train together.

In this TIE workshop, participants will learn about community agreements and research their benefits. They will also explore models for bringing this practice into their own artistic and/or educational spaces. This workshop is a part of the Intermediate Diploma.

• you are no longer able to attend a workshop that you purchased, but you want to exchange your registration for a credit of equal value for a future workshop launch
